During the Carnival, all the activity on the island revolves around these four days, when everyone has a day off work. Each day has its own theme: Burlesque Wedding on Clean Monday, Red Devils on Fat Tuesday and Devils and black and white clothes on Ash Wednesday.
Colourful, authentic, fresh, spiced and sparkling – the cuisine of Martinique reflects the generous and joyful character of its people. This is a flavoursome expression of history and knowhow inherited from our ancestors that arrived from Africa, Europe and the Indies. An adventure for your taste buds is guaranteed! For gourmets, the most difficult thing is choosing from a lengthy list of fine restaurants where they can sample Creole or international cuisine. Beyond the traditional family cuisine, Martinique also has many great, awarded chefs.
In the North, the sand has silvery, dark reflections, while in the South it takes surprising hues with shades of white and extends for miles lined with coconut palms. Everywhere, the waters are transparent.
The beaches of Salines, Le Diamant, Cap Macré, Figuier Cove, Michel Cove, Turin Cove are amongst the most beautiful on the island – while others are less known but deserve to be. Do not forget to make a stop on the beach of Anse Dufour, you may just cross a turtle and let yourself be tempted by the discovery of the Fonds Blancs.
Martinique is a fabulous gift from nature. All year round, the incredibly generous landscapes and vegetation on the island are a spectacle, for the eyes as well as other senses. It’s always a pleasure to enjoy the scents of flowers, the rustling of the forest, the ripling waves or the sound of waterfalls. The Island of Flowers (how we affectionately call Martinique) offers a wide variety of walks to discover these various landscapes: more than 150km of marked trails, coastal paths, shady forest paths and winding trails will allow hikers to enjoy beautiful vistas. Among the best known: the ascent of the Pelée mountain by the Aileron, the trace of the Caps, the great trail of the the Caravelle reserve, the peak of Crève-Cœur, and the Morne Larcher.

Martinique offers a magnificient environment and the best conditions to pratice various water sports for both athletes and beginners. For thrills, you can try sport fishing, tubing, surfing, kite surfing, parasailing, or windsurfing. There are several options to go along the coast and appreciate its beauty: a sea trip aboard a catamaran to meet dolphins and turtles, swim in the 'Baignoire de Josephine' or visit the Chancel Island, a sea kayak tour to discover the mangrove, a water ski trip or a scooter ride. Martinique is also known as the Pearl of the Caribbean for diving. The underwater world around the island is quite spectacular! You can discover the wrecks of Saint Pierre, the south coast along Le Diamant and the Trois-Ilets.
In Martinique, rum is a culture in itself. It forms part of the island’s identity and has deep roots in the very first sugar cane plantations. The only rum in the world to have earned the precious AOC appellation is exclusively produced on Martinique. Most distilleries are open to the public, and have their own specific history, visits and tastings. Some of the Rum of Martinique: Clément (Le François), Depaz (Saint-Pierre), Neisson (Le Carbet), Saint James (Sainte-Marie) and Trois-Rivières (Sainte-Luce).
