Travelling alone

Unaccompanied minors

Sometimes, it's necessary for your child to travel unaccompanied. Air Belgium has a dedicated Kids in the Air service to ensure that your child feels safe, secure, and happy throughout his/her journey.

Children between 5 & 12 years old

We provide a service to care for children between 5 and 12 years of age - that guarantees the safety of your child and ensures they feel well cared for and able to enjoy their flight.

Children are considered to be travelling alone if they are not accompanied by a person over the age of 16.

Please book our Kids in the Air service in advance, at least 72 hours before the flight. An additional charge for this service applies: 95€ per person and per flight. Please note that the regular adult fare applies when booking flights for an unaccompanied minor.

This service is available not only when a child is travelling alone, but also when he or she is travelling in a different travel class from the accompanying person. In this case, your child will remain under the supervision of our crew throughout the flight.

If your child has a disability or has reduced mobility, we regret to inform that they are not permitted to travel alone.

Young people between 12 & 16 years old

As from their 12th birthday, a child may travel alone if their parent or legal guardian agrees. Although it is not mandatory to use an Unaccompanied Minor service, we kindly recommend it and are still very happy to care for these young explorers.

Travelling can be challenging and stressful, so our team can escort them between the check-in desk and the gate as well as from deboarding the plane to the arrival in the airport hall until handover to the parents, family, or legal guardian.

We will make sure your child feels safe, confident, and happy throughout his/her journey. The same rates and regulations as Unaccompanied Minor service apply: 95€ per person and per flight. Please note that the regular adult fare applies when booking flights for an unaccompanied minor.

How does it work?

Check-in

When your child is travelling alone, please arrive at the airport no later than 2 hours before his/her flight departure time. This will give plenty of time for paperwork to be completed and for the assistance to be arranged.

Please proceed to the check-in desk with your child and their baggage. The baggage will receive a special label and will be delivered first at the luggage belt upon arrival.

For security and safety reasons, online check-in is not permitted for children who are travelling alone.

Special assistance desk

Once your child is checked in, please bring them to the Special Assistance desk. No worries, the check-in agent will indicate you the location of this desk. As the parent or guardian, you will be asked to complete all necessary paperwork, including giving Air Belgium permission to transport the child to their destination.

Your child's documents and passport will be placed in a special UM Pouch that needs to be worn around the child’s neck at all times and must remain clearly visible throughout the entire journey.

Gate

Once the paperwork has been completed, your child may proceed to the departure gate. You can choose to stay with your child up until the moment of boarding, which makes travel more pleasant for them. Otherwise, a member of the assistance crew can escort your child to the gate.

In both cases, we kindly ask you to remain at the airport until the aircraft has departed - in case of any delays or incident.

Upon arrival

Once the aircraft has landed, your child will remain on board until all passengers have disembarked. The assistance service representative will meet your child and guide them throughout the arrival process.

The assistance service representative will then meet the person who is collecting your child at destination. We kindly ask them to ensure they arrive on time at the airport.

Pregnancy

Under 28 weeks

You can book and fly as usual up to your 28th week of pregnancy, as long as you do not have any complications or medical concerns.

After the 28th week of pregnancy and up to the 36th week, you must present a medical certificate issued within 72 hours before the time of your travel stating that you are fit to fly.

Over 36 weeks

Unfortunately, beyond 36 weeks of pregnancy, we are not able to accept your booking, even with a fit to fly certificate.

New mothers are not recommended to travel within 7 days of giving birth. In exceptional circumstances, you may be accepted for travel, but only if accompanied by a medically qualified person and if you have a medical certificate stating that you are fit to fly.
