Baggage
Certain items can endanger the safety of an aircraft or the people on board. That's why transporting them as hand baggage or checked baggage may be prohibited or restricted.
These items may include everyday consumer items such as batteries, or certain cleaning products. Sometimes an exception can be made for passengers, provided they apply to Air Belgium for prior approval.
For more information about Dangerous Goods, please contact [email protected]
Baggage of any kind may not contain items which are:
Security restrictions and safety regulations prohibit the carriage of battery powered vehicles such as e-bicycles, hoverboards, self-balancing wheels and segways. These are not accepted in the cabin on Air Belgium aircraft. These battery powered vehicles can, however, be transported as cargo.
Your checked baggage may not contain:
Spare batteries and power banks must be removed from baggage before check-in as they are only allowed in the cabin.
Electronic smoking devices must be carried in your hand baggage. They are not allowed in the hold. Their use is not permitted on board.
For safety reasons we ask our passengers to carry all large Portable Electronic Devices (PED's) such as a tablet or laptop in the hand baggage as they contain lithium batteries which pose a fire risk. When these devices are carried in the cabin our trained cabin crew is able to supervise all devices and react on the situation.
You device is completely switched off and effectively protected from accidental activation. To ensure the device is never powered on during its transport, any application, alarm or pre-set configuration that may activate it must be disabled or deactivated.
Your device is protected from the risk of accidental damage by applying suitable packaging or casing or by placing it in a ridged bag protected by adequate cushioning (e.g. clothing).
Your device may not be packed in the same baggage together with flammable material (e.g. perfumes, aerosols, etc.).
Your checked baggage may not contain:
International security rules apply for carrying liquids and gels in your hand baggage. A maximum amount of 1 litre, divided into individual containers of no more than 100ml each.
What you can bring on board:
Lithium batteries can generate a great amount of heat if short circuited, or could catch fire if damaged, improperly designed or improperly assembled.
Whether lithium(-ion and metal) batteries and devices powered by lithium(-ion and metal) batteries are allowed on board depends on the watt-hour rating of the battery and the configuration (i.e. are batteries being used in equipment or carried as spare batteries).
Batteries over 160Wh are never accepted as carry-on baggage and can only be transported as cargo.
Due to security restrictions and regulations we do not accept battery powered vehicles (bicycles, hoverboards, Segway's) as normal sports equipment. Battery powered vehicles can be transported as air cargo and processed as such.
If you wish to bring the following items on board, you must obtain prior approval from Air Belgium by contacting [email protected]

Small musical instruments can be carried as cabin baggage, provided they are within the cabin baggage size and weight limits.
They must be small enough to be safely stowed in the overhead locker, or under the seat in front of you.
Musical instruments smaller than 115x45cm, such as a guitar or violin, are considered a standard baggage item and so are included in your hand baggage allowance. In this case, you may not transport any additional hand baggage item.
If the instrument is larger than the permitted cabin baggage size, for example a cello, and you wish to carry it in the cabin, you will need to buy an extra seat for your instrument, at the regular fare.
For safety reasons, this extra seat for your instrument is always a window seat.
The extra seat must be booked in advance, no later than 48 hours before your flight. Please contact our Call Center.
The extra seat for your instrument does not include any baggage allowance.
The instrument must weigh no more than 50kg with a maximum dimensions of 90 x 50 x 40cm
If the musical instrument exceeds the limits for the cabin or for an extra seat, it must be transported in the hold. Drums or a double bass are examples of items that are carried in the hold rather than on an extra seat in the cabin.
